Christfollower

July 8, 2008

I am, although somewhat reluctantly, beginning to identify myself as a “christfollower.” It is the best term I’ve found so far as an alternative to “christian.”  The more I find myself at odds with conventional religion, the more I am trying to identify myself in a different way.

At first, I wasn’t fond of the term “christfollower.”  That was mainly because of those apple-like commercials on www.godtube.com, where you would have a short conversation between a christfollower and a christian.  The christian was stuck-up, and the christfollower was laid-back.  I thought those were pretty exclusive commercials that harshly judged the christian.

But now I’m beginning to see the advantage of calling yourself a christfollower.  A lot of us are at the point where we’re looking at the way christians have traditionally acted, and the way they have viewed faith itself.  And we’re not really liking what we see.

In the past, I’ve been really critical of all things “emergent” and “postmodern.”  But I think I have a lot in common with those folks.  I still may disagree with a lot – but that’s something I’m finding out as well.  It’s not about signing the constitution of a new movement- it’s about following Jesus.

And, really, that’s between you and Big Papa.

Get it figured out.
